  1. They appear to have discontinued the "standard" Kappalite coaxials as well ...

Is this driver the equivalent of the Vortex 12?

I thought the Vortex driver came from Denovo?

  3. I know this is an old thread, but is anyone else enjoying their Vortex 12 or 15s as much as me? They continue to amaze me with their clarity and effortless dynamics.

  4. Yep, I have a pair of 15's and they are amazing! I really think with all of the great reviews out there now that they would sell a lot better if Eric brought them back again even at the higher price.

  5. I agree 100%. If Erich offered a flatpack option, that would go a long way toward making the kit more attractive also.

  6. Finally finished my first Vortex-15! This is a simple ported enclosure of 3.5 ft^3 tuned to 38 Hz, destined for center channel duty.

It sounds absolutely fantastic; balanced and dynamic, with that authoritative presence that seems to come with large woofers even at low levels. I love how the timbre doesn't change appreciably going from sitting to standing, and walking from on-axis to well off-axis. These impressions are just from test listening in mono on the workbench.

Thank you @Matt Grant and @Erich H ! I'm even more eager now to get the left and right speakers built.

  7. That looks like a nice build. I would love to hear the Vortex-15s and compare to the -12s, which I absolutely love.

  8. Any chance anyone has a set of the 15s for sale?

Have a pair already and would love another pair!

I second a return of these even if at a higher price. I think that since their reputation is a little better known now, they’d sell better but what do I know!

  9. I just purchased a set of three V-15s to go along with my twelve 12s. They seem to be popping up here and there over on AVS.

  10. Curious what the crossover frequency is for the 15.

  11. It's roughly 1300 Hz.

    Hey Matt,

Will the Vortex 12's be available again on the new site anytime soon??

Or would it be possible to get the woofer/CD models (I already have the crossover design image somewhere) to build my own out??

@Matt Grant we've chatted on a few forums and via email (thanks again for your time), and with the new house nearly ready I need to lock in a decision.

I’m deciding between the HTM-12 v2, 88 Special, and Vortex-12. Usage is about 50/50 music and movies. Music is hi-def 2.1 at ~85 dB MLP. The room is 15’ × 20’ with an open 12’ kitchen on one side.

Bass will start with one 18” Ultimax in a Full Marty on a QSC amp, with the option to add more later. Final system will be 5.1.4 Atmos; surrounds/Atmos are still TBD.

What I’m trying to understand is the real-world differences between these three, especially soundstage width, depth, and imaging. My current JBL monitors, in a 2.1 setup gives a strong phantom center and wide soundstage, and I want to improve on that. Space is limited due to a 70” OLED, and I plan to use the same speakers for L/C/R, which likely rules out the Vortex-15.

Given this use case and room, which of the three would you recommend?

Or would you recommend a different speaker all together (I am not opposed to selecting different woofer/cd and paying for a quality crossover design BTW!) ?

** In all honesty, something like the Alpha-8 Minion Speaker kit that you designed years ago would likely suffice for our needs, if they have the sound quality/imaging I'm looking for.

I love the idea of the Vortex, but can I still get the drivers needed to build them and use the same crossover or get info on any changes needed to the crossover for updated driver choices?

I've never heard Coaxials with CDs, so I'm a little apprehensive on how they will perform compared to studio monitors or other hi fi speakers I've heard.

    Thanks again for your time!
